KRALINGEN

Ponekod sta risarska in fotografska plast neberljivo staljeni v oblike in madeže. Drugod so obrisi drevja in jezerske gladine jasnejši in odzvanjajo organske madeže slikarskih potez.

KRALINGEN

Landscape 10/9 is a work from the Photoerrorsseries that explores the boundary between photography and drawing. Stemming from painting and drawing, I approached photography with the question of how the two media can meet. The resulting works are photographs fused with gestural prints directly in the making of the negative, which is why I call them photo drawings. It is a collage that is created in the device itself (and not later in the darkroom). The depicted landscape unfolds from abstract to recognisable images. In some places, the drawing and photographic layers merge illegibly into shapes and blobs. Elsewhere, the outlines of trees and lake surfaces are clearer and reminiscent of the organic patches of painterly brushstrokes.

The images in the Photoerrorsseries were taken in the wooded park of Kralingse Bos in Rotterdam, which for me is a symbol of Dutch nature. In a highly urbanised environment, every metre is measured out for a specific purpose, and the forest of Kralingse Bos is no exception. The lake and the forest that surrounds it were artificially created at the beginning of the 20th century. At that time, the city council decided that Rotterdam needed a large park with a real "Dutch character", and today it is the city's largest park. During a walk through the forest, you can observe birds, mice and dragonflies. However, if you have ever seen the vast forests of Slovenia, Kralingse Bos seems like a very "domesticated" wilderness.

I have tried to place the photo-drawings into the landscape they represent, i.e. among the treetops. To do this, I decided to layer the digital photographs. The black and white images hide in the forest like silhouettes and shadows, but they are also tautological. They emerge from behind the dark green branches – like memories and ideas about nature – in contrast to the tangible vegetation in front of me. This is also the case with the selected work entitled Kralingen.
